online tastemakers COOL HUNTING and ARCHITIZER join forces with DWELL magazine to curate a collection of objects that explore the relationship between architecture and furniture. the pieces speak to a new generation of architects who are testing radical ideas about materiality, computation, and fabrication — all at the scale of a chair and featuring gregorysung.
architecture is seldom just about walls, floors and ceilings — it’s also about the pieces that fill those spaces and define how they are used. the collection will be on display at the THE STANDARD hotel penthouse as part of the noho design district. for the show, COOL HUNTING and ARCHITIZER have tapped both established and emerging talent to show off furniture that tests big architectural ideas at a micro-scale.
modern architecture has a complex relationship with furniture. going back to the bauhaus notion of the gesamtkunstwerk, many architects think of furniture as an extension of the spaces themselves. almost every architect has designed a chair, but many have struggled with the process. mies van der rohe frequently said that chairs were more difficult to design than skyscrapers, while frank lloyd wright was known for designing shockingly uncomfortable chairs or his homes. today, young architects often treat furniture design as a way to prototype their ideas about space. the collected pieces, on view at the THE STANDARD from ,may 18th to 21st, speak to a generation of architects who are testing radical ideas about materiality, computation, and fabrication—all at the scale of the chair.
